Reviews:
“Beets:”
Awarded Best Original Script of 2015 by Denver’s Westword magazine.
Nominated for Best Original Script in Theater Colorado’s Best of 2015 awards
“The play's strongest achievement lies in the unsentimental, non-preachy message of tolerance and understanding that it weaves, a message that's particularly germane now, when sectarian violence is engulfing so much of the world.” – Westword Magazine.
"Beets" is a play that should mandatory for students interested in National History Day, and eager to learn about weaving together a story and historical facts. – Denver Post
“But a story this neat, this packed with geo-political meaning, and this primed and primmed for the silver screen just feels Disney-ready, already. Just one act into “Beets” it’s clear Padden has uncovered an extraordinary, almost-to-good-to-be-real-but-oh-my-gosh-it-is tale that simply cannot be ignored.” – Aurora Sentinel
“Beets gets my recommendation for multiple reasons, including that it sheds light on an obscure part of Colorado history, and that it does so in a dramatic and entertaining way. Issues of love, war, and foreign immigration (whether voluntary or forced) are just as relevant now as they were in World War II. Beets will make you think about some very big ideas about how we wage war and who and how we love. Any show that can put such profound subjects into clear focus is well worth the price of admission.” – Theater Colorado
“Cow Dung Dust:”
“As a dramatic reading, the conversation flows, laced with humor and drama bringing each character into sharper clarity.” – Berthoud Recorder
"Cow Dung Dust" is a thought-provoking, nostalgic look back the early 1970's, when the road beckoned and a thumb extended meant boundless adventure. "Cow Dung Dust" is a great ride. – Sunrise Ranch.
“The Great Loveland Potato Hoax:”
Colorado playwright Rick Padden has become the local master at enlightening and entertaining us with our forgotten history. Previously in his play Beets we learned of the WWII German POW’s that were used as laborers in the beet farms of Berthoud and surrounding communities. In Queens of the Row, we learned the history of prominent madams from Denver’s past. Now in the upcoming The Great Loveland Potato Hoax we are entertained and informed of a Loveland historical event that spread like wild fire across the world.
Acting:
“What makes "God's Favorite" work is the character of Sidney Lipton. Rick Padden plays him with terrific confidence, relish and flair. As the man in the middle, Padden blusters, pontificates and harangues, projecting his lines like guided missiles.” – Phyllis Walbye, The Loveland Reporter-Herald
“Of particular note is the character of the messenger Lipton, played brilliantly by Rick Padden. Like some weird cross between Don Knotts and Charlton Heston’s Moses, Lipton asks questions of Joe that the more skeptical among us always wanted to ask Joe… With the exception of Padden, the cast seems to have chosen to create characters less grounded in nuanced reality than in melodrama.” – Trevor Jackson, Fort Collins Weekly
“Padden has a good sense of comedy and timing and a very expressive face. His Geronte is fun to watch – Phyllis Walbye, the Loveland Reporter-Herald
