“Dunraven: Lord of
Estes Park” is packed with 1870s Estes Park history, starting with the arrival
of the Irish peer Lord Dunraven, a titled war correspondent, yachtsman, hunter
and world traveler, who became so enamored with the area that he proceeded to
buy it up for himself and his English friends to (allegedly and illegally)
create a private hunting preserve and entertainment spot of his own. Noted
English travel writer Isabella Bird and the infamous Rocky Mountain Jim (James
Nugent) add their special colors to this historic drama, which ends with the
first recorded murder in Estes Park.
Characters:
5 males and 3 females
Lord Dunraven, Irish,
Mid 30s (can be played older), an Irish Lord.
Griff Evans, Welsh,
40s, an early Estes Park settler and innkeeper.
Jane Evans, 30s (can
be played older) , Griff’s wife.
Jennie Evans, 17, the Evans
daughter.
Sandie McPhee, Irish,
20s, Dunraven’s “Gillie.”
James “Rocky Mountain
Jim” Nugent, 40s, a famous Colorado Mountain man.

Set and Costuming
This play takes place entirely in
the rustic, mountain cabin of early Estes Park settler Griff Evans, who plays
host to the other visiting characters. A simple, main cabin room is required,
along with an adjoining kitchen or cooking area, which are to be separated with
lighting as scenes needed.
Costuming is primarily 1870s
mountain western, with one character in formal, English period apparel.
